A motorist had a narrow escape after his car was hit by a train at a level crossing and dragged for about 50 metres yesterday. The crash occurred at the Uxbridge Road level crossing in Lakeside, about 7am. According to residents, the warning lights and booms at the crossing had not been working for months, resulting in an increase in similar incidents.

An 11-year-old boy, carrying home potatoes, was the latest victim of gang violence in Kensington. Rubin September, a pupil at Windermere Primary School, was still wearing his uniform when he was hit by a stray bullet and killed on Wednesday night. His body was found yesterday morning by neighbours in 14th Street.

Thousands marched to Parliament in solidarity with the al-Aqsa Mosque in Palestine yesterday, after violent clashes claimed seven lives in two weeks. This week, four Palestinians between the ages of 17 and 20 have been killed. The march also follows the recent call for Israel to dismantle security barriers at the mosque which included requiring worshippers to go through metal detectors.

There was a decrease in incidents of burglary and vandalism in Western Cape schools during the winter school holidays. A total of 15 cases were reported, down from 21 last year. One case was reported as major while the 14 others were classified as minor.

Just over an hour after Kensington and Factreton residents came together in solidarity against the recent spike in gang violence, a 26-year-old man was shot dead on Sunday.
Residents had protested against what they call a spike in gang violence in the area.

Visually impaired author, advocate and inspirational speaker Lois Strachan has been awarded this year's Toastmasters International Presidential Citation. The 46-year-old, originally from the UK, but who has been living in Cape Town for 20 years, said she was overwhelmed and honoured to have received this prestigious award and strongly admired the Toastmasters International programme and the work they do.

In a chance discovery, a new species of deep-water hermit crab - the "green-eyed hermit crab" - has been discovered. The creature is unique to South Africa's West Coast. UCT alumnus Lara Atkinson made the discovery while she was conducting a survey for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries three years ago, a UCT PhD candidate and researcher of this species, Jannes Lands-choff, said.

A Kensington couple accused of murder and neglect of 18-month-old Jeremiah Ruiters will return to court for a formal bail application next month. An emotional Abigail Ruiters, mother of the murdered child and charged with neglect and murder, was seated next to her co-accused, Ameeruddien Peters, the boy's stepfather, who is charged with rape and murder.
